When we went to "Outback Jacks" for the first time, we looked inside the restaurant and didn't see anyone else dining - never a good sign. However we were warmly welcomed by a friendly host and led around the corner to the booths - where we found the rest of the diners. The restaurant is a lot bigger than you expect from the front, with booths at the back and then more chairs and tables around the next corner. As we had our daughter with us, it was a great family area to sit close to the kids room (which had TV, Xbox and games) and we could spread out in the booths.

This restaurant has been open for two years. It has a relaxing atmosphere, with fairy lights on the roof, dark panelling, dim lighting (which is why the following photos look so dark), huge TV, Aussie artwork and large comfy booths.

All the artwork on the walls is for sale - including the full sized windmill head that you see as you walk in. Even the host was wondering how they were going to get it down if someone wanted to buy it!

The staff were very accommodating with our daughter, telling us about the lunch kids meals ($9.95 including scoop of ice cream), providing small spotty cups for drinks, a colouring-in and activity book and an extra little plate and tomato sauce for her meal (as we chose to share a lunch size chicken schnitzel meal with her instead of get a kids meal). The Lunch Menu is available 7 days a week 11am until 4pm.

We were very impressed with our meals - a juicy Angus burger (with delicious sauce) and chips for $16.90 and a lunch special Chicken Schnitzel, chips and gravy for $9.95. Other meals brought out to other diners also looked similar in size. Our host told us how busy it can on Friday and Saturday nights and we and see why - with plenty of seating, generous servings and a relaxed atmosphere it would be an ideal place for a dinner with friends.

If you would like to try something different, there is a croc burger on their lunch menu for $9.95 or perhaps try the "Skippy Dundee" which is crocodile and kangaroo skewers with bush chutney for $16.95.

Menu items include an extensive steak selection (which most men would appreciate), ribs, wraps, chicken dishes, seafood, burgers, pasta and a variety of salads to choose from all at reasonable prices.

If you love your steak, you could also try the Jacks Challenge. You need to register beforehand and receive a 1kg aged rump steak and meal for $39.95 - if you eat it all within 30 minutes you get the meal for free and a free gift.

If you have kids, Monday to Wednesday nights kids eat free which is an added bonus for an affordable dinner out with the family.

"Outback Jacks" franchise has almost 30 restaurants around Australia - including another restaurant in Canberra's CBD (London Circuit). As this was our first time, we were expecting it to be similar to "Hogs Breath", however we were happy to discover that it has it's own style and feels abit "older". The hosts and staff are particular friendly and welcoming, explaining everything in detail if you wish and coming back to check that you are happy with your meal.

Whilst we were there, the other diners were mostly families and couples in for lunch. It would be ideal restaurant for friends to meet together for a birthday celebrations, couples to have a substantial dinner together, and families to eat together with plenty of highchairs and kids room.

If you enjoy yourself, you can also join their birthday club where they send you discount vouchers for your birthday and throughout the year.

As this restaurant is located inside Westfield Belconnen, it is a handy location to have your meal and then enjoy a movie afterwards or go bowling at iPlay arcade.

Our family enjoyed Outback Jacks so much that we will be back....and perhaps we will be brave enough to try camel, croc or kangaroo...maybe!
