For a camp out that's gone to the dogs
"Out With The Dogs" is back. It's a novel way to raise money for homeless animals, organized by the AWLQ (Animal Welfare League Queensland). Last year, kids all over QLD camped out with their dogs and raised almost $8000. This year plans are getting bigger and better, with prizes to be won for "Biggest Campout", "Most Creative Camp" & "Most Money Raised". The aim is to raise $10,000 at this year's event. There's a Campers Kit to get you started, after you register.
If you don't have a dog, don't let it stop you - borrow one or invite friends or family, who do have one, to join you on your campout. Make the date for your campout on the weekend of Fri 26th / Sat 27th of October, 2012. Your campers guide is filled with ideas and an invite you can use. Start with the checklist for your event.
To register online, click here and follow the instructions. To register offline - there's a form on the back of AWLQ's "Short Tails" magazine, which you can pick up from the library. Prizes to win include Family Passes to: Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Skywalk and Putt Putt Golf, City Farmers Vouchers, Ipod Shuffle, passes to Naminbah Valley Adventure Horse Trails, Timezone and much more, including Sizzler dinner vouchers.
The AWLQ looks after around 15,000 stray and abandoned animals every year. Costs are around $500 per dog, for the rehoming process (feeding, housing, vet care, micro chipping, neutering etc) so there is a constant need to generate funds to keep the doors of the centres open.
If you have pet crazy children, chances are that they will be interested in Animal Antics - a one day program for children aged 6 - 10 years old. It's a hands on day of animal related activities during school holidays. The date for the upcoming holiday is Wed 26th September, 2012. The cost is $40. There's also a One Day Animal Care & Training Course (Wed 3rd October, 2012) for 11 - 16 year olds who love caring for animals and may want to work in the animal industry (cost is $55). An Education Officer from AWLQ will be at Runaway Bay library on Fri 28 September, 2012, from 10 - 11am, giving children (6 - 14 year olds) the opportunity to get up close with AWLQ animals. If you go along, please take a small donation for their pet food drive.
AWLQ hopes to raise $10,000 from the "Out With The Dogs" event. If you want to help them achieve their goal and have lots of fun with kids, dogs, family and friends, look out your tent and do something different in your own backyard, on the last weekend in October.
