Tribute bands cynically cash in on the popularity of the band they're paying 'tribute' to.

Deadnecks pay loving tribute to The Grateful Dead. One of the most popular and enduring bands of all time, yet are scarcely known in Australia. Tribute bands typically note-for-note covers of someone else's songs. Deadnecks extrapolate on the material of a band who were known for extrapolation - there is no definitive way to play any Grateful Dead song - and who wasn't adverse to covering other people's songs in that way themselves.

The Dead's music was rooted in folk, blues, country, jazz and of course psychedelia; their existence spanned decades, and they kept exploring all the way. Deadnecks use the Grateful Dead's music as a root for their own explorations, and make a joyous thing out of it every time they do.

Deadnecks know the Grateful Dead's music, they feel it deeply and have the musical chops to take it to another level. They're young, full of the spirit of musical adventure - and of course fun.

The band are well known for their energetic live performances and unpredictable song transitions when recreating source material. Deadnecks recently played a month-long residency at Hotel Westwood where they played 2 sets every Saturday in June without repeating a single song from the Grateful Dead songbook. It's no wonder the band has gained a loyal following of devotees, affectionately known as Deadheads.

Deadnecks met while studying for a music degree at Victoria University in Melbourne and formed in late 2018 as a jam session between friends in preparation for an upcoming recital. Once they 'got on the bus' there was no going back.

Soon after, the group - comprising of seasoned Melbourne musos: Evan Sillence (The Shifties), Fergus Kuhar (Trad Ukiyo, Wizard Tricks, Mudpunch, Lefluer), Blake Savanah (Jarrah Ma, Dick Willoughby & The Dirty Stop Outs, Mudpunch, Lefluer), Laura Madonna Murray (The Shifties, Merri Creek Band) and Gus 'Guscia' Cox (The Shifties, Jarrah Ma) - recorded their first live release Live at Kindred Studios: 01/11/19 in Yarraville.

They have since released two more live albums. A soundboard recording titled Live at The Mersh, Yarraville. 04/12/21, and Ned's Shreds Vol. 1: Hotel Westwood 11& #8203 ;/& #8203 ;06& #8203 ;/& #8203 ;22.

In the tradition of bootleggers recording Grateful Dead concerts, the youthful exuberance of Deadnecks has been immortalised by Ned, a friend of the band who was entrusted to capture these shows on his trusty recorder. All recordings are released on Giant Drop Records , an independent label owned and run by the band's hardworking bassist, Blake.

In August, Deadnecks co-organised Jerry Day, the largest gathering for Deadheads in Australia, in honour of band frontman Jerry Garcia's 80th birthday with shows at The Gasometer in Melbourne and The Red Rattlers Theater in Sydney. Alongside other Dead tribute acts, Shakedown Prophets and Ramblin Roses , the band paid fitting tribute to a rock icon with the Sydney show even featuring a Q&A with the legendary Sam Cutler, tour manager of The Grateful Dead and The Rolling Stones.

Deadnecks are poised to make their biggest appearance yet, at the alt-country festival Out On The Weekend on Saturday, the 8 October where they will be playing the Dead's classic albums American Beauty and Workingman's Dead at Seaworks Williamstown in their entirety alongside a huge line up of the best in the alt country biz.
