Walking back from my weekly volunteer job on a Saturday morning, I noticed
Oushou at 264-266 Toorak Rd, South Yarra (03) 9191 0123. It's a hidden gem you'd hardly notice if you were not looking as you walk past. Its doorway is inset from the street front, it's the lectern stand with the menu resting on it that catches your attention. The decor was very pleasant and spacious on the inside, with a Japanese warrior suit sitting in one corner, the wide open windows looking out on Toorak Road with stained glass fittings looking a little out of place in a Japanese restaurant, however adding a touch of elegance from another culture of old. Funnily,
Oushou in South Yarra had a huge image of a beautiful reclining woman on the wall, tattoos on her body. It just so happens, it was the same image I used as my computer home screen for years. That's not all that was surprising; the lunchtime menu special prices ensured you got a meal for just over $16. The servings were generous and the service swift. Mind you there weren't many in the restaurant around the 2pm time we approached. There were three to our party, but the other two wanted the same Thursday to Sunday lunch special of Japanese fried chicken curry don. You can't blame them because I love a good Japanese curry myself. Rather than be triplets, I got the Pork Udon which was in a mild cream sauce, served with noodles. Both perfect meals for a slightly cool day. Naturally, we all take a bite of each other's meal for a taste and their crispy fried chicken was fried to perfection, still tender on the inside, and that curry smell wafting past my nose was divine. I needed a little more spice/heat in mine as it was a little mild for my personal taste, but no reflection on the authenticity of its taste.
Luckily
Oushou has many restaurants situated in Hawthorn, Brighton, Blackburn and Knox as well; so find one near you and experience an affordable lunch when you feel like spoiling yourself a little but staying within budget. You'll find their takeaway menu on the
website , along with the online flip book of the restaurant menu; the sound it makes when it flips from page to page, strangely appealing to me. I'm still flipping. There's also enough of a drinks list for those who love a little tipple with their meal. It seems if you head to Blackburn, they have some of the best offerings of Wagyu Beef Sukiyaki Sets you can indulge in.
