There are many cafes and restaurants popping up around Perth nowadays, and we are spoiled for choice. It is therefore great when one opens in a quiet suburb in the middle of suburbia.

One such is Our Table in Bedford which has been there for 2 ½ years now, and who describe themselves as a "local eatery - gourmet pantry".

We went there on a cold, wet, miserable day where we had record rains, and I suspected that the cafe would be fairly empty. To my surprise when we walked in at around 12.45 pm, there were quite a few people there.

I have often passed this restaurant/cafe and wondered how they survive in suburbia, however after having eaten lunch there, I can understand why. From the outside the place looks very unassuming and in fact, a bit drab on a wintry day. However inside, it is cosy, warm and the ambience was pleasant, with a varied choice of seating.

Having a bad back, there are a lot of cafes I cannot eat at due to the hard straight wooden or metal backs on their chairs, however this cafe almost catered to my back! They had several thick, almost sofa like booths for two and four, along the edges of the cafe. This was perfect for me as the back had padding and I could sit without pain - this is something that not many cafes think much about as it only affects a certain percentage of the population.

The tables were made of a rustic thick wood and the crockery was rather retro and extremely unusual and interesting. There is an outside eating area which obviously did not get used the day we were there, however it would be perfect for warmer days, and I'm sure would also be okay to bring your dog along too.

Inside it would probably seat about 50 to 70 people, and it is quite dark though plenty bright enough to read the menu. Having the affliction of being very slow to choose, I had already looked up the menu online - it is very extensive and I had a problem deciding what to pick! When we got the actual menu, it had even more on it than the online one, making it a more difficult for me to make a choice!

I was pleased that the menu was not just large main dishes, as is often the case. Their special lunch menu had smaller dishes which many people prefer and was in conjunction with the larger main meals. Our waitress, Emma, brought us our menu almost as soon as we sat down and also asked if we wanted drinks. We started perusing the menu and all the decisions I thought I had made at home flew out the window. I knew I wanted either roast duck in orange sauce with Grand Marnier, or the Seafood chowder as an entree with another entree. Ten minutes later we were still sitting there deciding, and I thought if I go on like this, the kitchen will be closed before I decide what I want to eat!

So I made an executive decision and ordered the entree size seafood chowder and the Cajun calamari. My friend ordered the creamy pumpkin soup, as well as the vegan bagel which sounded scrumptious. The meals arrived within about 15 minutes, or rather our soup did, which was what we requested rather than have both entrees brought at once.

My seafood chowder was thick with so many "shells" of different seafood that I did not even know what some of them were.

I checked the menu and it was prawns, mussels, squid, barramundi, salmon, mussels and lovely crisp toasted Ciabatta bread. The soup was creamy and the bread delightful dipped in the soup (okay I know this is not good etiquette, but I could not resist lapping up those last few drops of soup), and it was packed full of seafood. It was quite filling, and if I were not so greedy, I would have stopped there, however, I wanted to sample more of their food, so I did not stop!

My friend said the creamy pumpkin soup was also excellent and this came with strips of a flat bread which were toasted.

Next came my entree sized Cajun calamari which was Cajun spiced and served with garden salad and a sweet chilli sauce.

This was very lightly battered in the Cajun style batter and was extremely tender and not overcooked. The salad also had a very nice dressing on it and was very tasty. My friend had the vegan bagel which was cashew cheese, beetroot relish, pumpkin, tomato, and gourmet lettuce in a toasted poppy seed bagel, and cost $12.50.
I tasted a bit of this and it was delicious, with a very nice beetroot relish.

To top off a lovely meal, we both decided we had really eaten more than enough, and directly ordered a dessert to share! As I had taken so long to decide the main meal, I told my friend to pick this one, and we ended up having a Bacio Cake. I was pleasantly surprised that this was only a small cake, and the way they cut it in half for us to share and presented it with little pots of cream was excellent.

The plates had a novel idea of the white stars which I thought was part of the plate, however it was a "man made" pattern made of icing sugar! As we were paying our bill, I also noticed a cabinet full of more desserts to tantalise the taste buds, and this would also be a good place to come for afternoon tea, with plenty of choice for the sweet tooth.

There were also gluten free alternatives for many of the dishes which involved bread or croutons. Some of the more unusual offerings on the menu included:

  • SMOKED SALMON and AVOCADO BRUSCHETTA
  • PRAWN and CALAMARI LINGUINE, with spinach, and cherry tomatoes
  • TOASTED CHICKEN PANINO with San Daniele Prosciutto, baby spinach, Mozzarella and pesto
  • SPAGHETTI DEL PESCATORE - spaghetti with barramundi pieces, mussels and prawns in a light Napoletana sauce, fresh herbs and a hint of chilli
  • DUCK RISOTTO with mushrooms, spinach, roast pumpkin, white wine and Parmesan
  • KALE and RICOTTA RAVIOLI with homemade pasta pockets filled with Kale and Ricotta in a sauce
  • OCEAN and EARTH grilled rib eye (450 g) on the bone topped with pan fried mushrooms and prawns, served with crispy potato wedges
  • SCALLOPS SPIEDINO - Chargrilled and wrapped in bacon served with baked potato cake and a drizzling of basil pesto
  • BRANDY CHICKEN LIVER PATE - homemade Mahogany Creek chicken liver pate, flavoured with brandy
  • They also had a special children's menu and this consisted of about 10 items which is good to see as usually there is only about 3 items to chose from.

  • Then there were two pages of desserts and as mentioned, we chose one even though I am not supposed to be eating food with added sugar in it, however as we shared I thought it would be a special treat after a wonderful lunch!

Our Table is owned by Fabio Toscano who has owned it for the whole 2½ year since it opened, and Fabio is also the head Chef. They describe their food as "sampling the tastes of Europe – with Italian, French and Spanish flavours which are all part of Fabio's style".

Our Table has parking out the front, or if that is full, just round the corner there is more free parking, or there is an IGA with a large car park almost next to it. They are open for brunch, lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, and are situated at 180 Grand Promenade, Bedford.

Reservations can be made online here , or emailing [email protected], or you can phone 9371 3890.

It is a family friendly cafe which I know I will go back to in the future to try some more of their delicious food - it is well worth a visit at least once or twice!
