To visit Biarritz, Beirut or Bulgaria?
A Festival of French Films for 30 years (Facebook image)
Alliance Française French Film Festival opens in Sydney on March 5 and runs until April 10. The Australian premiere of Our Happy Holiday (Premières vacances) opens at Palace Cinema Norton Street Leichardt at 4pm on March 10. The director Patrick Cassir has created a delightful romantic comedy that stars his co-writer Camille Chamoux as Marion and Patrick Cohen as Ben.
Our Happy Holiday is a French language film with English subtitles. It has a rating of MA 15 and a running time of 105 minutes. There is sexual content and a small amount of nudity but it is all in context and certainly not gratuitous.
This is a modern love story in that our protagonists meet via Tinder and by all accounts should not be suited. Their differences lead to many funny situations which are portrayed via the witty dialogue and some slapstick style sight gags.
Marion & Ben (website image)
Marion and Ben are a couple of lonely thirty-somethings who after hitting it off on their first date impulsively decide to holiday together. Their destination of choice is Bulgaria, which is halfway between free-spirited Marion's usual venue of Beirut and Biarritz where Ben has holidayed with his family for more than thirty years.
The Airbnb in Bulgaria booked by Marion is not to Ben's 5-star taste and tests their burgeoning relationship with some hilarious consequences. The characters are believable as are the ridiculous situations they manage to find themselves in. Added to this, the supporting cast are great and the scenery is not half bad either.
Our Happy Holiday is a heartwarming funny film that will most likely be remade in English by a Hollywood studio.
