Other People's Money, the newest play offering performed by the Brighton Theatre company, can be experienced and enjoyed on many different levels. Written in 1989 by Jerry Sterner, you could be forgiven thinking that the deeper sentiments portrayed in the play were of the 21st century and in particular, of the current events and feelings in the USA. Despite these darker aspects of greed, manipulation and the corporate versus the small, the play is also a lot of fun.

The story is of a takeover bid by Lawrence 'Larry' Garfinkle, a Wall Street asset stripper, who, inspired by his computer Carmen, an older version of Siri perhaps, decides that the New England Wire & Cable Company would be worth a lot more money if he bought it and liquidated its assets. In opposition to this bid are the CEO of the company, Andrew 'Jorgy' Jorgenson, Bea his assistant and longtime partner, the company president, William Coles and the smart, somewhat brash, no-nonsense lawyer, Kate Sullivan.

The play, in two acts, deals with a number of very relevant and thought-provoking themes, namely corporate greed, the obsolescence of many manufacturing industries, the human aspect of company takeovers, constant world change and of course, the old question of money versus love. There is seriousness in many of the lines, and particularly seeing this play a day after the US election there was a lot of poignancy and accompanying shaking of the head by the audience.

There is also a lot of wit, laughter and joy in this play. The lines between Kate and Larry are sharp, quick-witted and often very clever. Both are very energetic, charismatic actors and a definite chemistry is evident between these two strong and believable characters. Jorgy, portrayed as an Australian, has his heart in the right place and we feel for him as the people-oriented, old-school industrialist, especially so in his speech to the shareholders. Bea and William, both playing their parts with passion and requisite craft, add to our understanding of the complexity of the serious issues and the often present conflict between the characters.

2016 marks the 40th Anniversary of the #all ">Brighton Theatre Company(BTC) and this play is a fitting end to another successful season. With 4 staged plays a year, directed by Victorian directors, BTC produces highly successful and entertaining plays in an intimate 93 seat theatre. Patrons can enjoy extras such as pre-show sherries, a supper after the final curtain and a chance to meet the cast and crew.
