Here is a fabulous chance for you to be one of the very first people to view this spectacular work. Starting on 23 April (preview 22 April) and going until 2 May, 2015 in the Visy Theatre at the Brisbane Powerhouse at 119 Lamington Street, New Farm is David Fenton's theatre adaptation of Oscar Wilde's infamous 'love letter', De Profundis .

The Visy Theatre is ideal for intimate performances and so is perfect for this production. Framed by the columns from the original building it is an intimate thrust-stage theatre with space for up to 200 patrons.

The show commences at 7.30pm each night except Sunday 26 and Monday 27 April. Ticket prices are:
  • Adult - $30;
  • Concession - $25.
  • An additional fee of $3 for single and $6 for multiple tickets applies to each booking transaction.

    Never before seen on stage, this contemporary theatre adaptation gives new dimensions to the classic literary work only possible in this stunning contemporary format. De Profundis is the brainchild of renowned producer and director and Metro Arts' CEO David Fenton who first heard of the letter in a documentary. He found the name so evocative he just had to read the actual letter. When he finally got the opportunity he was so captivated he read the whole document in one sitting. Immediately Fenton identified the potential of a thought-provoking and intense stage show.
    The letter on which the play is based was written in 1897 from Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde to his lover and betrayer Lord Alfred Douglas. As a complex and contradictory meditation on the nature of suffering and forgiveness the letter provides an intimate investigation of a world-class dramatist and shamed celebrity, suffering political imprisonment, censorship and trial by media.

    This wonderful theatrical adaptation of De Profundis is as sexually uncompromising, audacious and powerful as Wilde's letter. The play explores Wilde's persecution for being gay, his suffering and transformation in prison.
    This work is a one-man tour-de-force as performed by, Brian Lucas. For 70 minutes you will find yourself spell-bound as Lucas matches the emotive and eloquent dialogue of Wilde with his physicality. He poignantly embraces the complexities of this insightful, yet brutal and touching work. To add to the emotion of the words and actions the innovative multi-media set unfolds and evolves as it conjures up the literary world, the character's past, present and fateful future.
    The theatrical adaptation investigates human rights, their quashing and then their emergence and acceptance. As it progresses it charts the shift and suffering of discrimination for LGBTQI communities. It draws together threads of current debates about inequality under the law and reflects ongoing concerns through the mirror of time; the right to love, who you love, no matter their gender or sex.

    This is an important show about human rights, self-forgiveness and the very nature of art. It has taken Fenton 10 years to get his work to the point where he is now able to share what he has found to be most important about Wilde; his suffering and insight into what makes all of us human.

    This production at the Visy Theatre provides you with the extraordinary opportunity to be among the first in the world to see and experience this rich and dramatic portrayal of such an important literary work.

    Be warned though, De Profundis contains nudity and sexually explicit material so is best suited to an audience over 16 years of age.
