I visited Osaka Japanese Restaurant for dinner at Victoria Park just before a late night grocery shopping run at the nearby shopping centre. Online reviews for the restaurant were either fantastic or on the opposite end of the spectrum, so when a voucher was available I decided to try it out and make up my own mind.

When I stepped into the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised with the décor since I thought it looked like a takeaway from the outside. The restaurant does have a takeaway section but if you sit on the seats away from the takeaway section, it feels like a cosy little eatery with Japanese figurines dotting the partition in the middle of the room and Japanese inspired fabric lining the chairs with a large picture of Mount Fuji hanging on the wall.

We had initially bought a voucher which consisted of an entrée, main, miso soup and a soft drink. The food prices are actually very reasonable with a bento box ranging from $9.50 to $14 with choices such as teriyaki chicken, beef, salmon and fish; karaage, garlic and katsu chicken and tempura prawn dishes.

The bento boxes are served with fresh salad, 2 x sushi and rice.
We were blown away at how substantial the dishes were which we thought were value for money.

For our entrees, we ordered takoyaki (octopus balls) and crumbed scallops. I have had fried or crumbed scallops at other establishments before that had more flour than scallops but the scallops we ordered were juicy with a large visible scallop intact. However, I thought the mayonnaise and chilli sauce that came with the scallops were too heavy and detracted from the taste of the scallops. Similarly, the takoyaki balls were drizzled with heavy mayonnaise which somehow made the dish seem a bit unhealthy despite its tastiness.

The bento box was quite big and I struggled to finish most of my rice due to the size of the meal. My teriyaki salmon was cooked perfectly with enough teriyaki sauce to contain the sweetness without drowning the salmon flavour. The sushi, however felt a little dry.

I thought the service was quick although you won't get the full waiter/waitress service as you will need to order and pay at the counter. Osaka Japanese Restaurant is not fine-dining material but it is a great stopover if you are in the Victoria Park vicinity and are craving for a quick Japanese meal.

At food court prices, I felt that Osaka Japanese Restaurant was value for money. The restaurant is located at 366 Albany Hwy, Victoria Park and can be contacted on 08 9470 3971.
