Grab your ball, Frisbee and dog, this looks heaps of fun
Bentley, the two year old Labrador, is profoundly deaf. This tends to make me a little apprehensive when out walking him as he doesn't seem to pick up on signals from other dogs too well. Don't get me wrong- Bentley walks very well on a lead and is an extremely good natured canine. Not all dogs are though, are they?

His hearing impediment also means that I lack the confidence to let him off the lead for a run. If I call him to return he ignores me, which makes sense. This accounts for my penchant for dedicated off leash areas for dogs in my local area.

The good news is that I recently located another of these areas even closer to home. Situated in Sturgeon Street, Ormiston, adjacent to the Redlands Softball Park and near the railway overpass, this area has two fully fenced areas, one for larger dogs, and one for smaller. Although Bentley could be considered large I have much more confidence allowing him to frolic with the smaller pups.

There is no agility equipment so make sure you pack a ball or a frisbee so you can ensure you mate scores a good workout.

Great for frisbees or a ball

If you a looking to give the children a bit of a run at the same time there is a small playground not far up the road, though it is too far away to leave young children by themselves as they would be out of your line of sight.

There is plenty of parking available and the nearby Ormiston Shopping Centre, a three minute walk away, has the facilities to purchase a takeaway coffee to enjoy whilst the doggy wears himself out.

Even better news for dog lovers, the Redland City Council has published a brochure called Redlands Unleashed which I am finding a wonderful guide to the facilities available for man's best friend within the Redlands. Highly recommended, it lists designated dog parks, whether or not water or agility equipment is available, and even includes off leash beaches.
