In her new exhibition Orimoney, artist Mariya Rovenko takes paper currencies from around the world and transforms them into a menagerie of origami animals which in turn become art when rendered by the artist with pen on paper.

This exhibition is described as an ironic look at the importance of money in our society and an exploration of its symbolism, design and malleability. There is also a sense of challenging and unfolding cultural stereotypes in the use of specific currencies for the different animals.

For me, while the origami animals are impressive, I find the pen on paper artworks depicting the animals to be even more remarkable as they are so intricate and precise in their detail.

Mariya Rovenko is a Melbourne-based artist, illustrator & graphic designer. She was born in the USSR where her love of art started from a very young age in the form of drawing and photography. After finishing school Mariya became involved with costume design and also has an interest in street art, fabric and graphic design. After leaving the USSR and moving to Australia around 10 years ago Mariya has returned to her first love, drawing, and has a varied catalogue of artworks which you can view on her website here.

Some of the pieces included in the Orimoney exhibition are:

  • an elephant made from Indian rupees
  • a seahorse made from Philippine pesos
  • koi fish made from Chinese Yuan bills
  • a koala and kangaroo made from Australian dollars
  • a peacock made from an American hundred dollar bill
  • a dolphin made from two 5000 Icelandic krone bills
  • a butterfly made from Nepalese rupees
  • a turtle made from Maldivian Rufiyaa bills
  • an English bulldog made from an English pound note
