Did you know there is a native orchid reserve in Belgrave South? I discovered it a couple of years ago when doing some research on the area that I had recently shifted to. I was delighted to find out about this small but interesting reserve that runs almost parallel with Courtneys Road. You could almost miss it.
I've learnt that Baluk Willam Nature Conservation Reserve is a sanctuary for over a third of Victoria's orchid species. That's amazing for such a small conservation area. Apparently you can see the Green-comb Spider Orchid in spring when they are in flower. And there are others such as the Cobra Greenhood and different helmet orchids which flower in autumn and winter and are considered to be at their best between June and August. Sounds like it's time I go there for a visit again.
There is a Friends of Baluk Willem Reserve and they meet on the 4th Saturday or every month, excepting December.
