Last weekend the sun was forecast to shine and my wife and decided to do something with our Saturday other than doing the weekly 'shop'. We set off to the Redlands' Orchid Society's annual show.
Every weekend in Queensland a number of small Orchid Societies hold their annual shows. For an entrance fee of $2-3 you will be treated to a display of the pride and joy of the society members for the judges and general public to admire and judge. The range of plants on display can be truly breathtaking and all exemplars of their type.

Just one of the orchids on show.
Another of the orchids on show.
Besides exhibitions from the society's members there are plant sales by the society members, professional growers and suppliers of a range of materials needed to help you grow your own orchids ranging from special liquid fertilisers to hanging baskets to bales of sphagnum moss. You should also take advantage of the many 'How to...' workshops that are offer and provide basic to advanced tips on growing and propagating your own orchids - these are free and provided by experts.
Don't forget to visit the hosting society's plant sales.
These sales of orchids by the hosting orchid society are always busy, but are good value...
Beware: These plant sales are very popular and to get the best plants at unbelievably cheap prices you must get to the venues early, but if you can't make an 8:30am start don't be too worried as there will still be a far greater range of orchids available to purchase than you are likely to find in any general garden centre or the plant centre of your local DIY store.
A list of upcoming orchid shows for 2013 in Queensland and New South Wales can be found on the Brisbane Orchid Society's website 'Benching' refers to the time the show is open for exhibitors to display their orchids for the show rather than for the general public. The site also provides general background information and advice as to the growing and propagation of orchids.
