On a cold and windy evening, a friend and I burrowed our heads in our coats and raced to the historic Big School Room at Sydney Grammar School for a delightful night of smooth and classical tunes. Four of Australia's illustrious chamber musicians were gathered on this evening to perform classical and romantic music from the 19th century, specifically Vincenzo Gambaro's arrangement of Haydn's string quartets, Schubert's String Trio in B-flat and Hummel's Clarinet Quartet in E-flat. The four comprised of violinist Rachael Beesley, clarinettist Nicole van Bruggen, violist Simon Oswell and cellist Michael Dahlenburg.
orchestra seventeen88 aims to inspire, educate and enlighten audiences. As a former violin player and an admirer of chamber musicians, I can affirm that the repertoire performed on the night certainly inspired me to pick up my violin again. It was fantastic to see the strings and bow simultaneously move and produce such enchanting music. The orchestra also informed the audience of the Romantic era in HIP style (Historically Informed Performance), the arrangements of the evening and the classical instruments.
Each performance was followed by a lengthy and boisterous applause. The four musicians turned the ambient atmosphere to a cheerful and cheering craze. I believe that was most special about the evening. The ambience was lighter and less strict than a traditional concert. It felt private and more interactive with Rachael and Nicole speaking directly to the audience and the musicians played their pieces beautifully. It certainly felt as if the instruments were singing to us.
If you'd like to see all of orchestra seventeen88, they have collaborated with Sydney Chamber Choir and artistic director and conductor, Richard Gill AO to perform Joseph Haydn's pieces ('Nelson' mass, Symphony No. 104 'London' and Ross Edwards' Missa Alchera - Mass of the Dreaming). This event will occur on Saturday 1st October 2016, 7.30pm at the City Recital Hall, Angel Place Sydney. Tickets are on sale via City Recital Hall Angel Place, visit the website
here .
I thought the evening was spectacular. An audience member was sitting in the front row with a wide grin across his face whilst nodding his head to the sounds of the music during the show. I think that's how I'd sum up my experience.
