At a time when the world is experiencing acts of violence and unrest both locally and internationally, it is was opportune to attend the Orange and White Peace Day on Sunday 28 April 2019. The free, multicultural, multi-faith public event was held on the grassy greens of the Robelle Domain at Springfield and hosted by the Gandhi Salt March Ltd.

The day was inspired by the teachings and messages of Global Mahatma Gandhi which was reflected in the theme of the day "Peace is the Path." In keeping with the name, attendees wore orange and white to represent peace.

Here are some of my personal reflections of the event:

Peace March
The day kicked off with the beating Drums of Kerala troupe leading a procession of participants in the Peace March. The procession curled its way from the Mahatma Gandhi Bridge to the Robelle Domain Parkland Springfield to walk together to support unity and harmony. Some walkers carried colourful banners, bearing messages of peace in the Gandhian tradition.

Victims of the recent Christchurch massacre and the Sri Lanka bombing attack were remembered in a prayer ceremony led by Multi-faith religious leaders to pay homage to the deceased.

Peace Forum
The tempo then changed when perspectives were shared in the Peace Forum with four guests from politics, business and ethnic communities took to the stage to discuss the topic: Fostering Unity through Ethics in Business and Politics. There was an interesting range of views shared in an open and collaborative way.

All of this plus a host of multicultural entertainment. It was a day and evening of glorious colour, solemn remembrance, ideas and perspectives and food.

The Orange and White Peace Day was a great occasion for community cohesion to stand together for a world where peace, non-violence and inclusion are honoured. I felt uplifted by the feeling of unity and look forward to future events by Gandhi Salt March Ltd where everyone can join together to say "Peace is the Path".
