Aridhi Anderson's contemporary version of Shakespeare's
Hamlet is written and performed through the eyes of Ophelia, the daughter of Polonius, Hamlet's principal Secretary of State in Denmark. In Shakespeare's version, Ophelia is a potential wife for Prince Hamlet. However, Hamlet kills Ophelia's father Polonius, which causes her apparent descent into madness and suspected suicide. We also know Hamlet is haunted by his father's spirit and his sanity is questionable. Some interpretations of Ophelia's lines suggest her madness is a result of sexual assault by Hamlet and the loss of her mother at an early age.
Ophelia's Inner Monologue attempts to highlight the issues of identity, female empowerment, equality and domestic violence. The central character 'Ari' wants to be an actress and spends her time practising audition pieces in her apartment. Her lawyer boyfriend does not value her love of theatre and regularly verbally abuses her over the phone. Ari is afraid to leave – as she does not work and is dependent on her boyfriend's income, which allows her to focus on her theatrical dream.
Ari explores her own identity and empowerment by stepping into the shoes of Hamlet's characters including the Ghost, Ophelia, Hamlet and his mother Queen Gertrude to explore her own identity and empowerment. Eventually, a friend encourages Ari to pursue her acting dream and consider leaving her boyfriend.
Ophelia's Inner Monologue is a short play that explores very important issues and I look forward to further developments by
The Day Dream.
The Day Dream is a theatre community in Delhi, India and Melbourne, Australia founded by Aridhi Anderson in 2015 and continues to develop adaptations for performance in Australia and India.
