Operation Jeedara is a campaign to protect the beautiful Great Australian Bight from damage and destruction. It started in response to plans by BP to drill for oil in the waters off the Great Australian Bight. Operation Jeedara is an initiative supported by many groups which Fight for the Bight as part of the
Great Australian Bight Alliance .
The Alliance includes the Wilderness Society, Sea Shepherd, Australian Marine Conservation Society, Surfrider Foundation Australia, and indigenous Mirning Traditional Owners. Their goal is to stop risky BP exploration in the Great Australian Bight, a major tourist attraction that is an important part of our natural heritage. The Great Australian Bight is
rich in beauty and biodiversity, boasting the world's most significant Southern Right Whale nursery, as well as Humpback, Sperm, Blue and Beaked Whales. It is also Australia's most important sea lion nursery and supports orcas, great white sharks, southern blue fin tuna and other fish down to the small pelagic.
During Operation Jeedara the Sea Shepherd flagship
Steve Irwin will sail from Victoria, calling at Victor Harbor, Port Adelaide and Kingscote on Kangaroo Island before heading to the Great Australian Bight. From there it will showcase what all of us will lose if oil and gas multinational BP are allowed to drill for oil in the Bight.
