First performed in 1871 and composed by Giuseppe Verdi the Opera is set in Egypt and depicts what is known as "The Old Period".
Today the work is amongst the most performed around the world. The famous New York Metropolitan Opera has performed Aida more than 1,100 times since 1886.
Aida, an Ethiopian princess has been captured and enslaved by the Egyptians. An Egyptian military commander falls in love and finds his loyalties divided. Radamès, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh.
It's a complicated story as Amneris, daughter of the Pharaoh is in love with Radamès.
This is a four act opera that takes the audience through the King's Palace and the Temple of Vulcan. (Sorry Trekkies, wrong Vulcan!) The chamber of Amneris and the Grand Gate of the city of Thebes. Scenes on banks of the Nile, near the Temple of Isis and the last act, again to the temple of Vulcan.
The opera's story was used as the basis for a 1998 musical of the same name written by Elton John and Tim Rice. The music was of course, a little different from the original score.
The Coolangatta night sky will be lit up by lights and fireworks. The huge cast and orchestra perform Verdi's famous music in a new production featuring fireworks, fantastic singing and colourful costumes.
