For a wonderful night of entertainment that's totally FREE of charge thanks to Australian businessman Anthony Pratt, head to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, on Linlithgow Avenue, Melbourne for Opera for the People on Saturday 1 February 2020 from 8pm to 11pm. The program for the evening is bound to delight opera aficionados and novices alike, and it's a wonderful opportunity to introduce someone to, or get a taste of opera yourself.
Anthony Pratt's generosity and continued contribution to Australia's cultural landscape makes the arts more accessible to all Australians and promotes introducing new audiences to opera and classical music totally free of charge. Gates open at 4pm, so if you'd like to enjoy some pre-show entertainment before the concert, be sure to come early. Lined up for a program of family-friendly entertainment are Brihony Dawson, performance art trio Born in a Taxi and magician Anthony Demasi.
At showtime, Australia's most famous diva, Dame Edna Everage, simply known as Dame Edna aka Australian comedian Barry Humphries will be hosting the show. Known for her bejeweled cat eyeglasses and boisterous greetings of Hello Possums, you never know what to expect when Edna's at the helm. Complete with a 60 piece Orchestra Victoria, enjoy exhilarating top notes and stunning harmonies as some of the most exciting singers perform the opera hits you love best.
Joining Dame Edna on stage are local Melbournian Baritone Simon Meadows and Mezzo-Soprano Angela Hogan. They'll perform under the baton of Brian Castles-Onion. The evening will be filled with best-known arias and overtures including the Habanera from Carmen, Nessun Dorma from Turandot, and musical classics to sing along to from My Fair Lady and Annie Get Your Gun.
