Opera Australia opens their 2018 season with Elijah Moshinsky's production of Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata.

The audience is immersed in visual delight through intricate set and costume designs, from glamorous and lively parties to sombre scenes in a courtyard and bare Parisian room.

Verdi's classic opera tells the story of Violetta, a wealthy courtesan, who in her final months of life, finds love with her admirer Alfredo. The relationship is short-lived when Alfredo's father, Giorgio, requests Violetta to leave Alfredo to preserve their family honour. Violetta woefully agrees, returning to her courtesan life. Alfredo and Giorgio later realize their wrong and seek her forgiveness.

Corinne Winters makes her debut with Opera Australia, in the leading role of Violetta. Surprisingly, though being cast in the role many times prior, Winters appeared nervous and lacked theatrical expression on opening night. Opposite, Yosep Kang delivered a fine and pleasing performance as Alfredo with strong control of voice and convincingly acting as a lovesick admirer, jilted lover, and a remorseful man seeking forgiveness. Disappointingly, there is no chemistry between the two main characters, with Winters having more connection with the audience than with Kang. Act II between Jose Carbo (Giorgio) and Winters is possibly the most engaging, with both performers holding strong vocal command and together portraying the difficult struggle in asking for, and agreeing to, such a sacrifice.

An enjoyable classic, La Traviata plays at State Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne, until 11 May 2018.
