Open mic nights at The Imperial Hotel, on the corner of Spring and Bourke Street, are held every Wednesday night from 8.30pm. And if you want to try your hand at stand up, then registrations start at 8.00 pm the same night. This is what I did last week. And believe me, great fun was had by the audience and myself. It is truly an amazing night all round. So if your pockets are empty but your capacity for fun isn't, than this truly is one of the best gigs around.
They have some more seasoned comics hosting and introducing the newbies, and they are a lot of fun also. All of the stand ups you see are different in style but all - at least this night I went - were all funny! No, not trying to toot my own horn -I have a feeling that it is like that most Wednesday nights. Lookout for a jar where you can volunteer to put some money in - to go towards the hosts - and they deserve it - but again it is optional.
Seriously one of the most entertaining free nights you will have out, and we are not talking for a half hour either - guess it depends how many comics register, but I'd say most of these nights are at least 2 hours long. But don't worry because there are actual seats. It is a proper venue, upstairs from the popular downstairs pub. Performed in one of two rooms where other nights you pay to see well known comedy acts.
So bring your funny bone before too many people find out about this amazing free show!
