Free arts, film and dance events - a feast of activities

Marrickville, in Sydney's inner west, is a hub of multiculturalism, and at the Open Marrickville festival, a perfect opportunity is gained to celebrate this feat. Open Marrickville is an annual festival where the various musical and other entertaining talents are coming out and being unleashed. Talented locals submit their idea to the local council by a certain deadline, and it all happens from there.
An eleven day celebration that is now in its second year, Open Marrickville is all about celebrating the areas cultural diversity through dance, storytelling, art, theatre and food, to name a few. The events also take place in nearby areas such as Newtown and Petersham. A few suburbs in nearby Sydney's inner south are also represented. All about multiculturalism while having fun.
Event Highlights - Art:
Art at Marrickville Park is a free event as part of this festival. Held from the 20th to the 30th of June, a plethora of drawings and artistic objects depicting the history of the area cane be seen. Sources include local libraries and businesses. Further information can be found by clicking here.
For some art in Newtown, At The Vanishing Point will be displaying art relating to refugee issues. Solid Ground II: Echoes is the name of the exhibition held to celebrate Open Marrkcville. This exhibition runs from the 13th to the 30th of June between 10am to 6pm. Entry is free.
Meanwhile at Tortuga Studios at St Peters, an artist expresses his journey from Mongolia to Marrickville through visual arts. This Open Marrickville event is where the best of art and music intertwine. This free event opens on the 20th of June between 6pm to 9pm. Otherwise viewing hours are from Friday the 21st to Sunday the 23rd of June between 11am and 3pm. Entry is free.
Photography is also part of the arts calendar thanks to the Flash Hub. A chance to have a photo taken of you at various booths throughout the festival, between the 20th to the 24th of June. A slideshow of these photos will be viewed at the Red Rattle finale on Sunday the 30th of June, and also at the STUDIO 2204 Pasifika. STUDIO 2204 is home to the Pasifika Film and Arts Festival. Films, art and performances on the pacific to Marrickville will be on show. For film screenings, please bring something comfortable to sit on.
The Pasifika Film and Arts Festival will open on the 21st of June between 6pm to 10pm, and other opening hours are as follows:
Saturday 22 June 2013 - Sunday 23 June 2013: 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Friday 28 June 2013 - Sunday 30 June 2013: 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

The Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney will present an exhibition called the Ancient Treasures from our Sister Cities, on Friday the 21st of June between 6pm to 8pm. Talks will also be offered and bookings are essential by going to this link.
Event Highlights - Food:
This is where Newtown shines. The Tom Foster Community Centre will be hosting a cooking demonstration as part of Open Marrickville. Food samplings are also part of the deal. Home cooks will teach those in attendance how to cook and prepare dishes such as Tabouleh and Gazpachos. All attendees also receive a recipe booklet of the 12 different cooking techniques.

Adults $5, includes a recipe booklet. Free entry for students and concession card holders, however entry is also $5 if interested in a recipe book to take home.
