A travel through ancient times
For a limited time, Melburnians can view significant artefacts from the Athens' National Archaeological Museum.

Open Horizons - Ancient Greek Journeys and Connections at the Melbourne Museum in Carlton, a short walk or tram ride from the CBD, offers a glimpse into life in Ancient Greece, early trade routes, and the spread of goods and ideas across the Mediterranean, Europe and beyond.

Collection items include exquisite and fascinating objects crafted from amber, ivory, gold, lapis lazuli, bronze and copper from as far north as the Baltic Sea and as far east as Mesopotamia and Afghanistan.

A highlight is the marble sphinx, its ancient, regal female head atop a winged lion. Of note as well is the gold signet ring, its precious metal shining brightly as it has done for centuries, highlighting the craftsmanship of classical times.

It is humbling to stand near these ancient items, which have not only travelled from Greece for our benefit, but also through time, a testament to our common humanity and capacity to create and shine.
