Open Gardens have been a tradition in Victoria for almost 30 years with the first gardens being open and on display to the general public in 1987. Initially arranged by Open Gardens Australia up until its closure in 2015, the open gardens scheme is back with a new not-for-profit organization continuing the long tradition of opening private gardens throughout Victoria.

After their inaugural season in 2015, Open Gardens Victoria are back in 2016 with another stunning program of open gardens that will prove irresistible to garden lovers. This year's program features a number of inspirational gardens encompassing the entire range from designer to owner-grown and maintained, huge to tiny, rural to metropolitan and everything in between. The program features a mix of gardens that have delighted visitors in the past along with a selection of wonderful new ones.

Attila Kapitany's Open Garden (27-28 August)
1 The Lough Court, Narre Warren North

Kicking off the 2016 season is Attila Kapitany's succulent garden which features an amazing collection of agaves, aloes and yuccas amid colourful ground-covering succulents and Australian bottle trees in a series of terraced garden rooms. Surrounded by a boundary hedge of conifers with views of a large ornamental lake, this garden demonstrates how to deal with the challenges of a sloping site and nutrient deficient soils.

Munro Court (10-11 September)
Munro Court, Castlemaine

At the turn of the century a dream was founded to produce a communal water-wise garden surrounded by a small housing development that would not only be sustainable but would offer security and privacy to local residents. Munro Court in Castlemaine is the end result with 18 houses now linked by a common garden comprising of hardy Australian natives, large granite rocks, mulched planting mounds and water-permeable gravel paths.

Stoke (17-18 September)
150 Warrandyte Road, North Ringwood

Sheltered by a range of large trees, Stoke is a lovely example of a suburban home encompassing a vegetable garden and a bush garden all grown in an environment of sustainability and compost. Order is mixed with disorder, and the resulting effect is a garden to be admired.

Woodlands (17-18 September)
152 Warrandyte Road, North Ringwood

Next door to Stoke is Woodlands, an old property centred by a beautiful oak tree. The house was rebuilt in 2007 and the gardens have been redeveloped over the last few year with an end result being colour, structure and semi-formality.

Fairholme (24-25 September)
35 Prospect Hill Road, Camberwell

Nestled behind the large bordering hedge is a home of late Victorian / early Federation identity. The garden has been designed to reflect that era, with structure and lines being prominent. Mature trees provide plenty of shelter and cover for budding flowers, and become home for many small local birds.

**
Placida (24-25 September)**
4 Coppin Grove, Kew

This charming near city garden has been the pride and joy of the owners for some 14 years now with great views of the surrounds only beaten by the garden itself. Beautifully manicured and tended, the garden features soft edging and walls to surround and guide the perennials, shrubs and trees, many of which were established last century.

Gherang Gardenalia (8-9 October)

Located 30km southwest of Geelong this beautiful rural garden highlights sustainability in an environment of water conservation. Featuring a mix of natives, potted succulents and garden giftware, this garden is worthy of a day trip.

**
Sam Cox's Wattle Glen (15-16 October)**
12 Lorimer Road, Wattle Glen

Garden designer Sam Cox's own Australian native garden uses Castlemaine slate paving to link the mudbrick house to the garden and surrounding bushland. A waterhole, edged with boulders and aquatic plants, and fed by a waterway, nestles into the landscape. It is shaded by lemon-scented gums, and surrounded by mass plantings of chrysocephalums, goodenias and correas.

In addition to the wonderful gardens on display at each property, there are usually information sessions, Devonshire teas, scones, cake stalls and plant stalls with some gardens also hosting small markets and live entertainment from local musicians. All surplus funds raised from the day are directed towards local charities.

Each garden is generally open from 10am to 430pm on Saturdays and Sundays (few exceptions noted above and on the website), and has an entrance fee of $8 to $10 with some discounts for concession holders and kids. Further details are available from the Open Gardens Victoria website or from their Facebook page .
