Does a walk around the garden with coffee count as exercise?
Have you heard of Birkdale's Giving Garden?
Ian and Judy Wintle are opening their one acre garden to the public for the 18th consecutive year on the weekend of 23rd and 24th of November. It's known as TheGiving Garden because they share their home grown fruit and vegetables with friends, neighbours and even the local wildlife. The garden was also therapeutic at the time of a family tragedy and assisting in their healing journey.
Over the years, the Wintles have raised over $60,000 for charity mainly through a local Lions Club and in 2017 were honored by Redland City on Australia Day as "Local Heros." They have also been awarded 'Gardening Australia's 'Golden Trowel' and have appeared on many television programs.
The garden now includes seven rainwater tanks holding 109,000 litres of rain water, 5kw of solar power on the roof plus solar lighting and hot water, worm farms, native bee hives, large composting areas and around 150 bales of sugar cane mulch in the garden every year, making it sustainable.
Interested in getting some ideas from hands-on hobby gardeners? The Giving Garden, at 5 Carlton Court, Birkdale, will be open from 8:30am till 4:00 pm on both days.
There will be an area where rare and interesting plants can be purchased as Judy is a keen propagator though sales are cash only.
