Walyo Yerta Community Garden is a small community garden in Adelaide. Located just south of Veale Gardens on South Terrace, the gardens are a tranquil place away from the noise of the city.

The gardens are shared between local residents and children at the Gilles Street Primary School, who visit every Thursday as part of their class work. I've often been for a walk in the gardens in the last few years and have noticed how productive it is - as did people at the recent Al Salam Festival .

Fruit and vegetables rub shoulders with smiling sunflowers in the densely populated garden beds, while a variety of aromatic herbs are dotted wherever space is available. Even in winter the garden still produces, but in summer it can be very bountiful.

Visitors are welcome to see the Walyo Yerta Community Garden at any time, but on Sunday March 20 the gardeners will host a free Open Day. Come along with a picnic lunch and prepare to be educated and entertained. Take a tour of the gardens or watch free demonstrations on making compost, collecting seeds and the art of companion gardening at this free event.

Learn about cooking with some of the more prolific produce from the garden such as amaranth and sweet potato leaves. If the Jerusalem Artichoke is ready for harvesting, the gardeners will be talking about how to cook this unique vegetable too. The community gardeners will be happy to answer any questions about growing vegetables, fruits and nuts, and herbs on the Adelaide plains.

Take a break from your education - browse market stalls selling seeds and seedlings, handmade art and craft from the south west corner of the city, embroidery by Jeni Kent, meet local author Richard Samulis and buy a copy of his recent novel, or enjoy tea or coffee for a small donation.

If you're looking for something for your garden, don't miss the seeeds and seedlings - parsley, rocket, chillies, lettuce, sweet potato, and calendula for as a companion plant. all of these are grown at Walyo Yerta Community Garden. I love to grow a few rocket plants at home because they are so easy to look after. The real reward though, comes when I use rocket as fresh greens in my sandwiches as it goes with most fillings.

There's entertainment for all ages - a wind ensemble comprised of Elder Conservatorium students will play sweet, soothing melodies, and of course there will be plenty of fun for kids too. The activities for kids are all garden themed and they will love the Easter egg hunt and searching for plants.

The Walyo Yerta Community Garden Annual Raffle will be drawn at the Open Day, so be quick and pick up some tickets early. Tickets cost just $2 each or 6 for $10, and the prizes include art works and some very handy gardening goodies.

The Open Day is a free event and takes place on Sunday March 20 from 11am until 2pm. For more information or to ask questions you can find Walyo Yerta Community Garden on Facebook. The garden is located in the South Parklands behind the conservatory in Veale Gardens - just follow all the green thumbs.

After you visit the gardens, take a wander around the gorgeous gardens. The kids will love the ducks, and you may catch sight of some radio controlled model helicopters or drones in the nearby flying club field.
