Today I had the good fortune of meeting Paul and Tracy Smith of
cradle of hills wines at my first visit to the
Willunga Farmers Market .
Visitors can sample
cradle of hills range of artisan wines every 4th Saturday (of the month) at the Willunga Farmers Market. I couldn't go past the special of 2 for $40 and after a fair bit of tasting and consideration, selected the
Gi Gi rosé (2013 - named after Paul and Tracy's daughter who also coined the name
cradle of hills) and the
Darkside shiraz mourvèdre (2011).
I found Paul and Tracy to be genuine and knowledgeable people who lovingly and sustainably craft their wine (predominantly basket pressed) with their own locally grown red varieties and a beautiful chardonnay variety produced in Basket Range.
So sublime was the experience of supping on
cradle of hills Wild Child chardonnay (2013 - wild yeast fermented, triple chill filtered with neither a trace of or need for finings) - I feel it truly represents Paul and Tracy's organically driven philosophy inspired by the Latin proverb
nil magnum nisi bonum (
there can be no greatness without goodness).
cradle of hills is hosting its annual open day celebrations and launching its range new release wines on Sunday, 13 April 2014, between 11am and 4pm at its Sellicks Hill winery.
It'll be a family friendly day, with something for everyone. Winemaker, Paul Smith will be offering barrel store tours to interested guests.
Enjoy the retro grooves from 70s and 80s vinyl music whilst enjoying what is sure to be a hearty lunch. Each main meal will include a generous serving of beer and beef gourmet sausage and a choice of either slow-roasted lamb or pulled pork, with a self-service buffet of baked vegetables and cous cous, a choice of two fresh salads (green salad or rocket and fennel salad), home made fresh tomato sauce, garlic cream, humous and a wrap (if you so desire).
Lunch is available at $12-$16 each (per adult); $5-$8 for kids 5yo and over (kids under 5yo are free), desserts are $3-$5, beverages from $4 (including non-alcoholic).
