Is this the most remote Chinese restaurant in Australia?
Coober Pedy is a remote outback Australian opal mining town. Nearly all of their supplies are trucked into town and people spend most of their lives never leaving town.

As such we were not expecting gourmet meals in this remote part of the world.

Wandering along the Main Street amongst the red bull dust and rocks we came across the Opal Chinese restaurant.

Looking more shower block than gourmet

It is situated behind the pub and looks more like the back of a shower block than a gourmet restaurant. However we were hungry and decided to give it a go.

As we entered, we were immediately warmly welcomed by our waitress and given any table we would like to choose.

The menu consists of a large sheet of paper, double sided and laminated.

Their range was quite good and even for vegetarians there were several options.

We made our selection and settled back with a cool lemonade and hot Chinese tea to wash away the dust of the day.

Ahhhh, we felt better intermediately as the liquids wet our parched throats.

Amazingly promptly the first dish appeared on our table. A simple fried rice but it was delicious.

No sooner had we popped some in our bowls, then the next dish arrived.

This time we had chosen garlic beans. Delicious also, with even the young children loved them.

Each and every dish that was brought to our table was tasty and fresh.

My all time favourite was the salt and pepper tofu. It was crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle with just a hint of spice.

To finish with, for dessert, was deep-fried ice cream and banana fritters. Alas we were too full to try any more but I'm sure it would have been good.

When we finished we were met with smiles and a complimentary lolly for the walk back home.

The Opal City Chinese Restaurant is located behind the pub on the Main Street, Coober Pedy.
