If you want to do a bit of treasure hunting you can't go past op shops. Smaller op shops are well stocked with a wide array of goods, but if you're looking for furnishings the larger Op Shops are the logical choice. There are a number of op shops in Hobsons Bay.
Pier Street, Altona is home to the Second Gear Op Shop, run by the Salvos. The shop is open 6 days a week, and of course the stock is constantly changing. A golden rule when op shopping is; never, ever hesitate, if you see something you like, grab it, or you run the risk of it being snapped up by someone else.
Williamstown has two op shops of note, the first is located in Stevedore Street and is run by the Uniting Church. This op shop stocks donated goods such as clothing, shoes, manchester, books, toys and bric-a-brac all at rock bottom prices. It is open 6 days a week.
Another popular op shop the Western Health Op Shop is in Ferguson Street, Williamstown. The shop stocks all the usual items and even boasts a section for "designer label" clothes. The shop is open 7 days a week, on Sundays until 3.00 pm, with all proceeds going to the local hospital.
Opportunity shops offer guilt free, affordable shopping to even the most frugal of us. There is a wide range of goods to be found in the average op shop, garments, shoes, manchester, books, CDs and DVDs, furniture and bric-a-brac with the proceeds going to charity. I am constantly amazed by the things that people donate (throw out), from the weird and wonderful to fashions with the price tag still attached.
There are a number of other excellent op shops in the West but I am not going to give away all my secrets. Happy hunting!
