Do you love op shopping and the thrills that come with sourcing quirky and retro items at bargain prices? Consider a change of scenery from the usual Northbridge and Fremantle haunts and go on an op shopping adventure in Kelmscott!
Based at the foot of the picturesque Perth Hills, Kelmscott is only a 30-minute journey from Perth CBD by train. There are 6 op shops located along Railway Avenue, all of them an easy 5 to 10-minute walk from Sherwood Station. There is also plenty of car parking in the area if you choose to drive.

Coming from Sherwood Station, 2nd Chance Op Shop at 255 Railway Avenue is your first stop on your treasure hunting expedition. Proceeds go to a variety of causes such as the Yarloop fires which caused a lot of devastation back in January 2016.
2nd Chance Op Shop
This shop has an entire section dedicated to electronic goods out the back. They also sell some cute and very affordable gift packages containing items like soaps and body lotions. These would make fantastic gifts for occasions such as Mother's Day and birthdays.
Opening hours are 9:00am – 4:00pm weekdays and 9:00am – 2:00pm on Saturdays. You can phone them on 08 9399 3658.
2) AnglicareWA Op Shop
A 2-3 minute walk down the road will take you to the next lot of op shops with AnglicareWA Op Shop being the next in line (1/227 Railway Parade).
AnglicareWA Op Shop
This was probably my favourite store in terms of the set-up and quality of items available.
Whilst browsing through the dresses, my heart lit up when I discovered a purple dress for only $5. It smelt incredibly fresh and clean, showing how much care goes into these items before they are sold.

In the crafts area, I found a few goodies such as pastels for $5, a flower press for $1.50 and some greeting cards for only 50 cents each.
Items costing $7 from AnglicareWA
AnglicareWA Kelmscott are open 9:00am – 5:00pm weekdays and 9:30am - 4:30pm on Saturdays. You can call them on 08 9497 4416. They are also willing to pick up donated goods for you – just call 08 6253 3535 to arrange a date and time for collection.
3) Salvos Store
Next door to AnglicareWA at 227 Railway Avenue is the Salvos Store. They have some nice pieces of art work for sale, with one piece only selling for $13, a huge drop from its original retail price of $38. Op shopping is a fantastic way to find quirky items to decorate your home instead of buying the same items everyone else has from Ikea and Kmart.
It was interesting to learn that donations made to Salvos Stores
are saving 1000 tonnes of goods from going into the landfill each week!
I ended up buying this real cutie of a coat for only $16.25! I am looking forward to wearing this during the winter months.

Salvos in Kelmscott are open weekdays 9:00am - 5:30pm and Saturdays 9:00am - 5:00pm. Their phone number is 08 9399 7773.
Next is Crossways Op Shop, which is conveniently located next to Salvos and AnglicareWA (Unit 1/225 Railway Avenue).
Crossways Op Shop
Crossways is a charitable organisation that offers a range of services such as emergency relief, food vouchers, professional counselling and adult community education programs.
When you first enter the store, you might be a bit surprised by the smell of fresh bread. Indeed, they have a shelf full of fresh loaves of bread for sale by the counter.

Their opening hours on their site seem out of date, so it might pay to give them a call on 08 9390 0054 before you pay a visit.
Coffee/lunch break: I was very intrigued to discover that Crossways also run a café next door to the op shop. Unfortunately, being a Saturday when I visited, the café was closed but their menu looks very promising with items such as milkshakes, lamb burritos and egg rolls at very affordable prices. They are open from 10:00am to 3:00pm Tuesdays to Fridays (again hours are from their website). This could be the perfect place to have a coffee or lunch break and get your energy levels up for the last few shops on this street!
This shop is dedicated to helping support the lost, stray or abandoned animals at Armadale Community Animal Rescue Group. In fact, this is the first time I've encountered an op shop dedicated to supporting animal care, which is pretty cool if you're an animal lover!
Upon first entering I was enamoured by all the shiny jewellery on offer! Being a real hoard, I was impressed that people are willing to donate all these items!

The Animal Rescue Op Shop also sells furniture and will even provide some tips to inspire you to take on a new DIY project such as with the below dresser. On sale for $50, they suggest chalk painting the sides and legs, varnishing the top and drawers and adding a blackboard instead of a mirror!

This store is open 10:00am – 4:00pm weekdays and 9:00am – 4:00pm on Saturdays. You can call them on 08 9495 4495.
6) Good Sammy
To conclude our op shopping adventure, Good Sammy is our final destination! This shop is across the road from the Animal Rescue Op Shop, on the corner of Gillam Drive and Railway Avenue (1 Gillam Drive).
Good Sammy are dedicated to providing employment for people with disabilities. Like the other stores, they too have a huge range of clothing for all ages, both male and female. They also have a large electronics area at the back of the store.
My morning spent op shopping in Kelmscott was definitely the adventure I was looking for. You could make this trip part of a larger day trip to Armadale or Perth Hills. If you live in the area, consider checking out some of these op shops for yourself and supporting some local causes on a regular basis.
