When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of all gyms, I wasn't surprised. I knew it was going to happen and that it was the right thing to do. But it made me sad. Like many, all I could think about was how long was the lockdown going to last for? And when was I going to be able to work out in a gym again?
Nicole Cifelli is a Personal Trainer, Spin Instructor, Coach and IFBB Bikini Athlete based in Perth, Western Australia. When gyms were ordered to close nationwide due to COVID-19, Nicole wondered how long this would last and how this would affect her clients. To give herself something to do and to help out her clients, Nicole came up with the idea of offering FREE 30 Minute Daily Work Outs every day at 9am via Zoom.

Nicole started running the sessions on 27 March 2020 to give herself a routine, structure, and a purpose. She decided to make the classes free, due to the nature of the pandemic, which has seen a lot of people lose their jobs and currently going through hardship. The classes have received a strong response online, with patrons praising the sessions for having an impact on their mental and physical health and helping them stay sane during lockdown. Nicole posts a weekly schedule for the classes on her Instagram page. The sessions focus on areas like glutes, Hiit cardio workouts, and strength exercises.
The classes are available for anyone who wishes to join in, regardless of their fitness level. Nicole posts a Zoom link via direct message on Instagram the night before each session which includes instructions on how to join the meeting and a list of all the equipment that will be needed. Sessions run for between 30 and 40 minutes.

I signed up to do a Full Body strength class on a Saturday morning. I was told I would need two medium weights and two heavyweights. Nicole suggested that if I did not have any dumbbells, I could use things around the house as a substitute, like long-life milk, water bottles or books. The night before the session, Nicole emailed me the link to attend the Zoom meeting. I'd downloaded Zoom on my iPad the night before. If you've never used Zoom before, it's an easy app to use. I was able to hear and see Nicole clearly and the connection didn't falter.
The class ran for 40 minutes. Nicole talked us through exercises like planks, lunges, bicep curls, and weighted squats. I tried my best with the exercises but found out that I have gotten a little out of shape after being in lockdown for weeks. I enjoyed the exercises using weights the most. I was able to find some old weights in the shed so I was able to use those. It felt nice to lift weights again.
Nicole did a really good job hosting the class. She was a positive, energetic instructor, who clearly has put a lot of time and effort into structuring these sessions to deliver the best workout possible. As the class progressed, she called out praise to other people participating and flashed me a thumbs up when she saw me trying my best. I found her class to be a really positive experience, one that I would recommend to others who might be interested in keeping fit in lockdown.
