One thing that everybody must do to survive is eat, and to eat, one must shop, unless of course you grow everything to sustain life, which is probably impossible given how small most people's backyards are and therefore everyone must go and do the mundane act of grocery shopping daily, weekly, fortnightly or whenever you need something.

It got me thinking of ways to avoid supermarkets without going hungry or spending a life's savings at the nearest corner gourmet grocery store. I decided online shopping could be the way to go, however, at what cost and is it possible to be cheaper?

Here's what I found, depending on the way you shop it can definitely be cheaper online.

  • If you order a kilogram of chicken and it weighs in at 1.2 kilograms then you only pay for the kilogram. Same goes for anything that gets weighed such as seafood, fruit and vegetables and deli items.

  • You can see the total price after each item is added, which is a great way of keeping your budget intact, as opposed to getting to the checkout and being surprised at the amount.

  • Specials are available online also.

  • It's a good way to shop if you're hungry, impulsive or love those multi buy deals that are placed at the end of each isle. Shopping online will take the temptation away and you're more likely to save money on snack foods and help the waistline.

  • Safeway offers free delivery on your first order, so it's a great way to try it out and see if online shopping suits you.

  • Is it more convenient to shop online?

For me this is 70% yes 30% no, the plus side is if you're like me and have tantrum throwing toddlers, have just had surgery, don't drive, work long hours or just don't like strolling the isles of the supermarket then online is a good option.

The down side is making sure you are home for delivery, which is offered in 2 hour blocks for Safeway and 1 hour blocks for Coles in which your groceries will arrive. You can ask them to leave the groceries say in the garage and if you have a fridge or freezer in there for the cold items, it's perfect. For elderly or disabled you can leave a note on the checkout instructions to have the delivery person take the shopping through to the kitchen.

Many friends shop online and love the ease of the website and are happy with the items they receive, they say their frozen goods are delivered without being defrosted and only once received the wrong product which in turn was replaced and money refunded.

Overall you can save money by shopping online as you buy less than what you do going into the store and you know how much you have spent before going to the checkout.

    Delivery fees:

For Safeway the minimum spend is $30 to get groceries home delivered and the first delivery is free.

After that delivery fees depends on how much you spend so $30 -$99.95 is a $13 delivery fee and keeps getting less the more you spend; $300 is free delivery.

Coles works on a different system and it depends on when you want it delivered depending how much it costs, with the maximum being $13 and the cheapest being $8.

When you compare the delivery costs to the convenience and cost of fuel you would spend getting there it works out pretty even.

    Happy online grocery shopping.
