Whether you've been working from home as a result of Coronavirus (COVID_19) or are part of a remote team, you probably know how hard it is to maintain a sense of connection with your co-workers - even if you are on multiple zoom meetings a day!
What better to bring people together in a relaxed and fun way, than with team drinks - and not just any drinks, but locally distilled gin from the heart of Richmond, Melbourne!
Brogan's Way is a fairly new distillery and bar, having only opened their doors in 2018. Run by a father (Simon) and daughter (Brogan) duo, who gave up their day jobs to dedicate their time to gin - Brogan the daughter is actually the distiller!
Originally qualified as a medical laboratory scientist, Brogan retrained as a distiller, completing a Master of Science Brewing & Distilling at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
When the agency I work with asked me to find a different and interesting way to bring the team (who had been working from home for months) back together to celebrate their 5th birthday - I approached Simon and was pleased to hear that they did indeed run online tasting sessions - hooray!
A couple of days before our session, the tasting packs were delivered to the office for collection by the team. A few were also made available for collection from the Distillery directly - for the locals, like me!
Each tasting pack was beautifully packed and contained:
3 x 200 mls of different matched tonic waters to match the gins :
- Capi Dry Tonic known as the bartenders choice; featuring a dry finish and lower sugar content
- Strangelove Dirty Tonic uses raw, unrefined cinchona bark to create an earthy, rich bitterness
- Capi Native Tonic is an ode to Australia's finest botanical ingredients, infused with a blend of lemon aspen, Tasmanian mountain pepper and Mount Zero salt
The packs also included suitable garnishes for each gin and our tasting notes. We also snuck in a cupcake from Cupcake Queens as a bonus treat (also delivered to the office!)
It's a lot of gin to drink, Simon warned us when we only booked a 1 hour session. In hindsight, we should have booked 1.5 hours... Despite this, the session was fabulous and we were honoured to have both Simon and Brogan join the session. We learned about each delicious gin, why we should not add ice first or use Schweppes tonic water and lots more...
My personal favourite was the Hearts A Fire - with its spiciness reminding me of Chai or mulled wine. But I see the Evening Light becoming an everyday staple in our home thanks to a lovely little discount and free delivery offered by Simon at the end of the session!
Well lubricated by our four drinks and feeling festive, we said our thanks and goodbye to the team from Brogan's Way and continued to party online - enjoying some team building games and activities!
If you're looking for an online social or team-building activity, that also supports a local business and female gin distiller - I would highly recommend contacting Simon and booking your own gin session!
