It is often harder than it sounds to find a good night out in Melbourne; location, prices and music all play critical roles in determining what makes a good night. Nevertheless, that is not too say Melbourne is devoid of a great night; look no further as 161 (Cnr of Chapel St and High St, Prahran) offers almost everything needed to have a great night while also catering for all age groups across most nights of the week.
In particular, Thursday nights are rarely less than fun at 161. Hosted by Streetparty, Shake Some Action at 161 has amazing drink specials, a cool and friendly atmosphere and rooms for dancing or simply chilling out.
The highlight of Shake Some Action proves to be the music. Each week three bands take the stage from 9pm – 11pm, making Shake Some Action one of the few places that are cool to arrive early too. You may see your new favourite local act or even an international band – Kisses (USA), who have been hyped as one of the must see bands of 2011 by the NME, played to a full house in June.
Bands are followed by the resident DJs; you will hear everything from The Strokes to Rihanna as well as a selected bunch of classic party tunes, resulting in an animated dance floor with an intensity that doesn't waver until closing. If that's too much to handle, downstairs offers a more relaxed vibe with the majority of tunes being more minimal, or if you're cool enough to get a V.I.P wrist band, the rooftop is a great alternative to listen to the DJs as background music while chain-smoking with your friends.
Additionally, entry cannot be forgotten: most Thursdays are $6 on a guest list – these are easy enough to find as many people will promote theirs on the weekly Facebook events – and you will rarely pay over $10.
Shake Some Action at 161 is unique; you can see great alternative bands and then two hours later be listening to the latest R'n'B, but most importantly, everyone seems to dig it - this is augmented by how cheap the drinks and entry are. Dress code is relatively alternative so don't expect to get in wearing snake-skin boots, white jeans and an Ed Hardy singlet (if you do though, kudos). These factors coalesce to ensure all will have a great night!
