"There are 107 marma points on the human body" my massage therapist says, and she seems intent on stimulating each and every one of them. I'm at One Wybelenna , a delicious day spa located in Brookfield. It's a Palm Springs style spa - all desert plants and old money. Upon arrival, I fully expected tumbleweed to come rolling through. But, for now, my massage therapist is lulling me into a state of somnolence, as her smooth and flowing strokes are punctuated by pauses at pressure points, inducing tension-releasing sighs and a deep sense of relaxation.

I'm still conscious, but barely. The part of my brain that is preserving this experience in memory so I can later write about it hasn't completely checked out, because I note that my breathing has slowed to a low ebb. Biiiiig pauses between in breaths and out breaths. And then I am conscious of nothing but floating in a bubble of bliss somewhere above the pool and lounge and treatment rooms of One Wybelenna . Simply turning over, half way through the massage, becomes a physical challenge of inordinate proportions.

This experience began with sips of warming lemongrass and ginger tea upon arrival. I then headed to the outdoor magnesium spa pool which is heated to a balmy 38 degrees - an additional treat that is available only to guests who have booked a treatment. Bathing in a magna spa is believed to provide a myriad of health benefits, such as detoxification and relief from muscle aches and pains. (Swimming laps in the pool was also an option, but nah, that sounded like too much hard work.)

My massage treatment commenced with a foot soak and grounding reflexology style massage, then my therapist encouraged me to choose a massage oil from a range based on Ayurvedic philosophy. "Do you mind getting oil in your hair during the treatment?" she asked. I couldn't care less. In that case, she said, it's advisable to leave the oils in as long as possible "because of their therapeutic properties and also because it preserves the tranquility of the session".

One Wybelenna was fashioned from a 1960s designed grand family home. The new design makes ample use of bluestone and timber, dramatic gardens and the liberal use of external chill zones, so guests can enjoy the subtropical climate. But leaving aside the stunning architecture, what everyone comes for are the soothing, relaxing and uplifting treatments. The spa menu includes massage, facial, and body therapies, as well as waxing, tanning and grooming services. Both women and men are catered for and there are unique therapies available for couples or expectant mothers. One Wybelenna is also popular for hens' parties. Here's hoping that I'll find another voucher for One Wybelenna in my Christmas stocking this year.
