This cosy little cafe just off Randwick's busy Belmore Road has managed to embrace the feel of the area and deliver it in a cosy brunch and lunch experience. The space is comfortable, and the staff clearly care about their place. More important than the friendly staff and the nice light atmosphere though is the food.
The First Enticement
The Bacon and Egg Roll (with spinach and home-made tomato relish) immediately jumps out of the menu, listed as 'the best bacon and egg roll ever'. While this cheeky claim has small print declaring that this statement could be inaccurate, the hype is well deserved. Sadly the vegetarian variant does not live up to its carnivorous companion, as the field mushrooms overwhelm rather than complement the rest, but the original is definitely in the discussion it wants to be in for best ever.
A Little More Lunch For those with a more lunchable intent, there is a full range of suitable options. My personal favourite will always be the Field Mushroom Risotto. The field mushrooms might be able to overwhelm mere egg and relish, but with enough cheese to satisfy even the most avid cheese-lover, this dish truly delivers on its piquant flavour.
The Cafe Essential Of course, with any cafe, the quality of coffee can break what is an otherwise very satisfying experience, and a caffeine addict need not be disappointed. My friends and I have developed the 'sugar test' for coffee. The worst coffee can be rendered consumable by three sugars as an act of desperation, and a bad cappuccino may require one or two. In this case the coffee sits at that wonderful point where it is palatable without a touch of sugar.
Why This is Secretly The Best If you wander down Belmore Road, you'll see half a dozen small cafes, and many are fine for a take away coffee. To sit in them and talk with friends, or ponder the depths of your morning coffee, you quickly discover that an open front to a cafe on Belmore Road is not the same as al fresco dining on a quieter street. One Six Nine, which references its Alison Road address in its name, has a proper front door. The ability to be enclosed, away from the sounds of cars and buses passing by, truly makes this one of the best cafes in the area to come with a good friend or a good book.
