What in your wildest dreams would you like to do this weekend? Go on a voyage on a tall ship? That's exactly what I'm doing!
As a volunteer on South Australia's one and only sail training tall ship, I'm a trainee crew member, so I'm still literally learning the ropes. When I came on my first training day in December last year I wasn't sure what was in store, but within a couple of hours I was climbing the rigging (with a safety harness) and learning to square the yards like an old hand.
This weekend the ship is sailing to Wallaroo for the third time, to fetch a group of Prince Alfred College students and put them through their paces before returning them, three days older and a whole lot wiser, to their families in Adelaide.
The One and All was built in 1985 in the style of an 1850's brigantine. It was originally designed to be a youth sail training ship, but it also takes paying passengers for day sails and longer voyages. The most exciting maritime event this year is the
International Fleet Review , which takes place in Sydney Harbour in October, and the One and All is all set to sail to Sydney to take part. She leaves her berth in Port Adelaide on September 1, bound for Melbourne. The next leg of her voyage is Melbourne to Hobart, on September 15, then on September 25 she departs Hobart, arriving in Sydney on Oct 3. If you prefer to fly to Sydney to watch the fleet coming in, you can sail her back to Adelaide via Melbourne on October 10.
For more details about these amazing voyages, go to the
One And All website or contact me here and I'll put you in touch with Stan Nowakovski, who is organising the bookings. But hurry - there is going to be a rush!
