Lind Lane Theatre group is a busy one, usually producing five plays per year. The program is carefully curated to ensure a good balance of comedy, drama and classics, plus the occasional musical.
To follow the sellout success of true-life drama
The Revlon Girl, the theatre has chosen a change of pace with classic comedy
Once a Catholic written by Mary O'Malley, a play set in 1957 in London at an all-girls School run by nuns.
It's hard to imagine in a world of the Internet and social media, but in 1957 there were none of the means girls rely upon to learn the facts of life. It was not an easy journey because although girls were told some information none of it was explained. Very few people even had a TV.
In this play, we follow three girls in their last year of school as they try to understand all the things expected of them in the years to come.
The explanations given to them are even less useful than most, being delivered by three very strict nuns, who in this production are played by seasoned comedy actors Yvie Somerville, Lea-Anne Grevett and Victoria McGuin.
Also adding to the humour is Matthew Taverner playing Father Malarky — a priest who is always in a hurry to get to the off licence and drinks just a little too much. A lively group of fresh, talented young actors rounds out the cast.
Director Judith Boyd is delighted to be finally bringing this production to audiences. "
This is our 'third time lucky' attempt after our hold ups with Covid. The production is finally here, and audiences are in for a comedic treat," she says. Judith loves to bring laughter and fun to the stage — Lind audiences may remember her recent delightful comic turn as Edith the maid in
Blithe Spirit.
Audiences are warned there is some coarse language in the play.
Once a Catholic plays from May 27 to June 4.
