Fancy letting your creative juices flow? Consider taking part in the weekly improvisation sessions with Adelaide's improvisation company On the Fly for only $2 per class. Each class consists of games and exercises to get you reacting instinctively and thinking on your feet. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and everything is done as a group to minimise stage-fright or shyness. It's a great place to let yourself go and explore funny, quirky ideas.
The beauty of improvisation is that beginners and advanced players alike can work together, with the experienced performers supporting and encouraging beginners.
On the Fly arrange visits from improvisation masters to take classes, keeping the company ever learning and developing. Several times a year you'll get the opportunity to train with a visiting teacher.
Improvisation in Australia is often know as Theatresports, which are a popular type of improvisational performance in which different teams improvise on a theme suggested by the audience. They are always looking for new players, and welcoming to all age groups and experience levels.
Examples of improvisation in the of popular sphere are the television shows Who's Line Is It Anyway? and Thank God You're Here!, though some scenes in these are far more scripted than in traditional improv.
See what the On the Fly improvisers do at the Grace Emily hotel in their monthly Tuesday night shows. Best of all, entry and laughs are free.
If you're inspired to give it a go, all comers are welcome on their Wednesday night regular sessions, 7.30pm to 9pm at the Box Factory. They also regularly run Boot Camps as introductory classes for beginners who want to test the waters.
Improvising is a fun, social and physical activity that will challenge your inhibitions, giving you some of the most exhilarating and fun experiences you're likely to get on a week night.
