The hidden story of Iraqi music is told in the 2015 documentary
On the Banks of the Tigris.
When Majid Shokor escaped from Iraq he discovered a hidden history in the songs he loved as a child in Baghdad. Saddam's regime removed Iraqi music of its origins. On a quest to learn more, Majid makes a bold journey from Australia to Israel, Europe and Iraq where he meets exiled Iraqi musicians – Jewish, Muslim and Christian - hears their music and stories and unite them in a joyful concert at London's Barbican Centre where music and culture are bridges for peace and reconciliation.
The movie was winner of Best Documentary at the Baghdad International Film Festival and the Audience Choice winner at the Arab Film Festival in San Francisco/Los Angeles.
The documentary is showing in limited release with the Queensland Premiere on 3 December to be screened at New Farm Cinemas. This will feature a Q&A with Director Marsha Emerman.
