Appropriately named, On Shore faces the shoreline at Dee Why. While the surrounding places offer either the traditional Aussie beach fare (of steak, chips or that classic favourite, steak and chips) or east Asian in various flavourings, On Shore has decided to hedge its bets and offer both.

It makes for an interesting weekend lunchtime. For my visit, I couldn't go past the pulled pork roll that was blazoned across the sign out the front.

I also couldn't go past the opportunity to eat dumplings by the beach. Result: pork dumplings, some lovely little pot stickers and half a pulled pork roll.

First (as always is with me on the weekend) the coffee. I had a sinking feeling when I saw the menu that the coffee wouldn't be astounding. Call it a caffeine addict's instinct. I was right. Although I played safe and had a mocha, it was still disappointing.

The food, on the other hand, was not. The pulled pork roll reflected the Asian leanings of the chef, with flavours of coriander and lemongrass gently coming through the barbecue overtones. The dumplings were light and tasty, with a vinegary chilli dipping sauce that was refreshing.
[BREAK]

My companions shared a BLT, which similarly steered away from the norm by being heavy on the L and T and wrapped in a tortilla. Their verdict was that it, too, was different but delicious.

On Shore is not like its beach companions. The prices are distinctly lower and the food reflects this. For someone who was able to sample a $12.90 pulled pork roll I really can't complain.
