Harbour Theatre proudly present the classic Ernest Thompson play, On Golden Pond, for a strictly limited season this May. This anticipated production marks Harbour Theatre's second season for 2013 - their Jubilee Year.
Whilst many are familiar with the Academy Award winning 1981 film adaptation of On Golden Pond, starring Henry Fonda (in his last film role), Katharine Hepburn and Jane Fonda, this is a unique opportunity to see the moving family drama in an intimate theatre setting. This particular production will be directed by Trevor Dhu and will feature a talented cast of actors taking on the iconic roles of the Thayer family.
The title of the play refers to Ethel and Norman Thayer's small lake house in Maine, beside Golden Pond, which the aging couple visit each Summer. Norman, now a retired professor, nearing eighty, arrives at the cottage, finding it in dire need of repairs. There are hints that Norman is hiding a serious problem with his memory, as forgets names of people and places which should be familiar to him. But Norman still carries on, even looking for a job much to his wife's chagrin. The couple soon learn that their divorced, middle-aged daughter, Chelsea, and her fiance, Bill Ray, and his son, Billy Ray Jr., will be joining them to celebrate Norman's impending milestone birthday.
However soon after their arrival, Chelsea reveals both she and Bill Ray will be heading off to Europe for a month while Billy Ray Jr. will be staying with Norman and Ethel; reluctantly they agree to the arrangement. What follows is the unexpected friendship between Norman and Billy Ray Jr., as well as Chelsea attempting to reconcile her troubled relationship with her father. This timeless family melodrama has received much acclaim from critics over the past three decades and is sure to delight modern audiences of all ages.
Harbour Theatre will be staging their production from the 10th to 25th of May 2013, including matinees' on Sunday 12th & 19th May at 2pm and a Charity Performance on Thursday 9th May.
