Prices are down, down, down ... , cheap, cheap, cheap ... , the fresh food people . . . , these are claims we are constantly bombarded with from the two major supermarket chains. A retailer whose prices are consistently cheaper and can really claim being a fresh food seller is .

It is indeed fortunate for me that I live reasonably close to Olley's. The regular route I take driving home from Brisbane takes me right past the market. On Saturdays I normally spend the day teaching in Brisbane city. Yesterday, driving home from my class I needed to buy some fresh milk, so I called into Olley's. The time was well after 6pm and being a Saturday the supermarkets were closed. But Olley's match their discounted price for milk anyway, selling two litre plastic bottles for $1.99.

Perhaps it's my Scottish heritage, but I have trouble resisting a bargain. There have been very few occasions when I have entered Olley's and only purchased the goods I had gone there for. This was the case yesterday. I had shopped in a Brisbane city Woolworths store at lunch time to buy my lunch. Among my purchases was some tomatoes for which I paid $3.80 a kilogram. Olley's was selling 1.5 kg bags of fresh tomatoes for $1.99. That's $1.33 a kg, about one third of the price being charged by Woolworths. So, tomatoes went into my shopping basket at Olley's along with my fresh milk.

An extensive delicatessen section offers an inviting range of meats, sausages and cheeses all of which are economically priced. I purchased large chicken schnitzel for dinner. And, large they were. When cooked covering about two thirds of the dinner plate.

I didn't go into the store for anything except for milk, but I just had to have a kilogram bag of the nectarines. I have just had two of these sweet, juicy and delicious treats for my morning tea on Sunday.

Not everyone is as fortunate as I am living so close to Olley's. But it is only about a forty minute drive south of Brisbane. Your savings will more than cover the cost of your fuel. Why don't you take a leisurely drive next weekend.
