A child with long brown hair sits almost elf-like in the dappled sunlight, her fingers strum melodically on a golden harp while entranced passers-by stop to listen. In the distance, hundreds of stalls selling a range of handmade and vintage goods stand before you just waiting to be explored; while fragrant smells of rich spices and freshly ground coffee entice your senses and beckon you further. Sounds like heaven right?
Well it's hard to believe that this homely, vibrant atmosphere is recreated on the first Saturday of every month! Starting in 2008, the Olive Tree Markets are a mix of the finest original wares Newcastle has to offer. With over 100 stalls, it's easy to understand why 'pickers' and lovers of home-made commodities like myself consider this to be one of Newcastle's best kept secrets; but it's time to share it around.
Selling a wide variety of items such as handmade jewellery, zines, homewares, art, toys, vintage clothing, ceramics, outdoor art, painting and handmade clothing – there really is something for everyone! If however, you too find the vast array of interesting items a little overwhelming; there's plenty of stalls selling delicious cultural foods and freshly ground coffee to sit and enjoy as you listen to the live, local music playing around you.
Located at The Junction Public School, the Olive Tree Markets provide a unique atmosphere and opportunity to support your local Novocastrians and artists doing what they love, so head there this coming Saturday (November 3rd) to explore it for yourself!
