Being away from home, I miss the unique flavours of Malaysian food. But with Old Town Kopitiam Mamak conveniently situated in the city, I still get a taste of home sweet home. For those looking to have an authentic Malaysian experience, this is the place to be. This casual Malaysian style restaurant serves a wide variety of Malaysian food ranging from the famous roti canai (Malaysian flat bread), to the Mamak Maggi Mee Goreng (Mamak style fried magi noodles) and even Malaysian roadside food such as Satay (aromatic barbecued meat on skewers).
Well known for its distinct tastes, Malaysian food is versatile and suitable for all. With our multicultural influences, Malaysian food is a beautiful combination of Chinese, Malay and Indian flavours. Looking for something mild and not spicy? The Beef Noodles (dry or soup based) and Pan Mee would be a good try. Feeling in the mood for a bolder flavoured dish? There is the Nasi Goreng (Malaysian fried rice) or Char Kuey Kak (fried carrot cake). And the list goes on not forgetting to mention my favourite Malaysian drinks and desserts on the menu as well. Signature mamak drinks such as the Teh Tarik and Old Town White Coffee here brings back memories from my high school days, as we sat around chattering away while enjoying a cup of ice cold Teh Tarik. Such good times...
During peak hours, Old Town Kopitiam is bustling, vibrant and packed with people. Customers get the special opportunity to watch different types of roti being made. Although a common and definite sight in every mamak stall in Malaysia, it is rare to come
across chefs skilfully flipping the flatten balls of dough here in Melbourne. The kopitiam is filled with the distinct and mouth watering smell of satays cooking on the grill.
Just like the mamak stalls in Malaysia, Old Town Kopitiam Mamak is a good hang out place at all hours of the day whether you're looking for quick snacks or even supper. I am excited about the new supper hours starting March 2011. Yay! It will be open till 5am on Fridays and Saturdays. Looks like I've found a place to quell my midnight cravings. Again, a flow of family midnight outings to the mamak come rushing back. Mmmmm... Check it out for yourself!
