A fun fusion of Asian kitsch and hipster chic makes a statement at . It's much fancier than I had anticipated, because I'm used to the plastic stools and modest (read: non-existent) decor of most Chinese restaurants in this corner of the city. We're seated upstairs, where there's a dragon water feature, mismatched chairs including stools in the shape of dice, and awesome tea cups with rooster prints that I really want to steal.

The menu is overwhelmingly extensive, with everything from dumplings to noodles to rice to desserts. We begin with buns. There are three types to choose from. We decide to forego the standard pork buns, and go instead with the Peking duck buns ($8 for two). A piece of duck and spring onion are enclosed in a soft, sweet bun. It's a great way to start the meal.

I'm a sucker for xiao long bao ($6.80), so it's the first thing that catches my eye on the menu. The pastry is thin, the soup inside is flavoursome, and the pork mince a bit more textural than other xiao long bao I've had. Overall, I'm pleased.

The pan fried pork dumplings in bird's nest ($14.80 for 8) are quite a sight. They're served upside down and look somewhat like a pancake. The nest is super-crispy, albeit a bit oily. Underneath there are eight succulent parcels containing pork meat.

[ADVERT]We want to order something a bit more substantial as well, and decide on Grandma's tofu with pork mince and chilli ($13.80), also known as mapo tofu to some. It's a go-to dish of mine, and here it's lovely and slippery with a good balance of sauce and chilli.

Old Town features a lot of yum cha style dishes – you can get a whole lot of dumplings and even mango pancakes. And I really dig the fact that you can get a yum cha fix in the evening. Even better, it's open until 2am every night, so you can drop in for a stellar post-drinking feed.

I'm keen to come back to try more of their menu offerings.
