Residents of Earth are living in somewhat perplexing times: The new space-age inter-planetary defense network only recruits from first world nations. More than that, it only takes up people aged 75 to do their battles. No one on Earth knows how or why this works, they just know that once someone goes up, they never come back.

And yet joining the colonial defense force is an incredibly popular move. For people who want to get off the planet, this seems like the perfect (and only) opportunity. As far as the individual recruits are concerned, they will be fighting for two years, and then settled in to a new life on a new planet.

This is the world that readers of John Scalzi's Old Man's War become acquainted with, as the hero and narrator of the novel, John Perry, becomes acquainted with military life. Military life is full of quickly made connections and even quicker deaths, as battle after battle is fought against various alien species.

Just as interesting as the alien species, however, are the ideas for technology that are found within the pages of Old Man's War. None of the technology, of course, is currently viable, maybe it never will be. But it is still interesting to think about.

To delve further into the plot of the book would certainly reveal some key plot points, so you'll just have to trust me that it is fascinating.

Stylistically, it is more or less a normal, plot driven novel. But that doesn't stop me from loving every page of it. It was quite awhile after I had finished reading it before I could stop talking about it. I definitlely would reccomend this book to a friend, which is why I'm reccomending it to you.

You can buy it from booktopia or from your favorite book or e-book seller. Happy Reading.
