A taste of the rustic Australian Bush
Trails for horse-riding are marked
There are quite a few scenic drives advertised around the Tablelands through visitor information centres, mostly through lush rainforest areas. We discovered a change in scenery when we started exploring old back roads of the Tablelands area.
One such road is the Old Kaban Road. There is bitumen at both ends - Flaggy Creek Road and Kaban Road… however, the long scenic stretch in the middle is a graded dirt road. It was pretty smooth going in a 4WD. It is definitely doable in a regular car, but may be a bit rough given it is a dirt road. Take care as the loose rocks and dust make this road slippery in areas.
Old Kaban Road is favoured by the Pony Club in Wondecla and also has many pony trails going off into National Park off this road. Watch out for horses when traversing the road! There is also a couple of side roads that go into National Park and for these, you will definitely need 4WD.
The scenery itself lends to a rustic, outback country feel. On this road, you will see Australian bush complete with banksia flowers, dry country, plenty of gum trees and the odd flash into the past with old buildings, wooden fences and farm equipment.
We spotted quite a few kookaburras as they winged across the road in front of the car, passed fields of drying maize, spotted an old railway bridge and noticed above of all, the smell! Before readers leap to the wrong conclusions about the smell being bad, it was wonderful. Crisp Tablelands air accompanied with eucalyptus and wood was the theme along this road (although we were lucky in being the only travellers on the road - there was no dust to contend with!).

It was a nice change from the tossing around of the Kennedy Highway between Herberton and Ravenshoe. We found the journey much more pleasant going when we drove the back way on Old Kaban.
How to find Old Kaban Road:
The road that goes out of Herberton, towards Ravenshoe is called Longlands Gap Road. A couple of minutes out of Herberton, along Longlands Gap is Flaggy Creek Road (to the right) which will turn into Old Kaban Road. This road can be followed all the way to Kaban Road just in Tumoulin, taking about 20 minutes or less and then you only have about 5 minutes drive to Ravenshoe. If you are looking to take the back way to Herberton after leaving Ravenshoe via Tumoulin, Kaban road is on the left about 5 minutes out of town.
