In 1965, the Franciscan Friars came to the 'Old Friary' Brookfield Centre for Christian Spirituality. To mark the 50th anniversary of this significant occasion a special FREE community celebration will be held on Saturday 3rd October, 2015.
From 11am to 3pm all are welcome to come along, bringing their family and a picnic lunch to enjoy music, storytelling and the beautiful parklands which make up the area of the 'Old Friary'.
There will also be an exhibition of the late David Binn's wonderful paintings on display as a celebration of his years there as Director.
In the 1960s the Franciscan Friars lived in the historic house - St Christopher's Lodge, and served the community through Meals on Wheels, a self help project for young unemployed, as well as providing assistance with the Ecumenical Coffee Brigade which served food and refreshments to street people and park dwellers.
As the community of brothers grew, they also pioneered residential care for those needing rehabilitation (men with psychiatric disorders, youngsters on probation, those who had served prison sentences).
Many in our community may also remember the very successful Friary Fayres which attracted hundreds of visitors and was a ready market for the keenly sought after Friary pottery, preserves and other produce.
The Friars also built the beautiful Chapel on the site which many enjoy to this day for family celebrations and Sunday evening services.
Come and celebrate this very special anniversary with the local community this Spring.
The 'Old Friary' is located at 139 Brookfield Rd, Kenmore Hills.
