The Old City Café is a new addition to the charming Balmain Village, a newly opened establishment for about 3 months in business. Interestingly displayed on the windows of the shop is a wonderful array of art and antiques. Upon entering the café, I felt like I was delving into a different world of beauty; from a modern society to an old city.
Decorated in a unique setting, The Old City is indeed an organic coffee shop that exhibits and sells vintage collectables from around the world. Owners Anthony and Wiam have travelled extensively and collected their hand-picked treasures from around 65 cities; from Verona to Dubrovnik, London to New York. Isn't it impressive?
No wonder the shop is filled with interesting, beautiful and quirky collectables, including bikes, musical instruments, paintings, a Kodak camera, a record player, antique clocks, a typewriter, and much more.
Adding to the charisma of the café are old time magazines, music and a Pac Man machine. When I continued with my exploration, another surprise came to me - the decoration is even extended to the ceilings with a collection of old photos, featuring the likes of Charlie Chaplin, which offer a unique ambience of nostalgia.
The coffee was great, freshly-brewed with beautiful aroma. If you love making fresh coffee at home, you can also buy the beans from the shop as the owners can vaccum-pack it for you. Striving for an environmentally friendly business, Ross Clararella and Wiam, the founder of Sprocket Roaster, are using their patented carbon-neutral process when the Sprocket Roaster coffee beans are roasted and packaged.
The Old City is not just a cafe, it's also a vintage store housed with functional collectables. The owners are very friendly and they also open their shop during weekend. Come over to indulge yourself with a cup of organic coffee and home-made cakes and pastries. Perhaps you can also pick a few items to add a touch of character to your home.
You can also enjoy the coffee by grabbing a table on the footpath.
